Bookmarked... #14

The return of the (mostly) weekly post letting you all know what I'm reading and have lined up for the week! It's my own version of Sheila at Book Journey's It's Monday What Are You Reading (now hosted by Kathryn at Book Date) and I have her permission to rename it for my own nefarious reasons...

I spent last week finishing off the Skulduggery Pleasant series. I'm not going to lie, it was emotional and I'm in absolute awe of Derek Landy. Luckily I have his new book to start, Demon Road, so may well pick that up this week. I'm reading Cinder again... I read it back in April 2014 and despite now owning Scarlet, Cress and Winter, still haven't got round to reading them so that's the goal for February plus it will add to my Retelling Challenge total.

Waiting On Wednesday #116 - Marked

Waiting On Wednesday, where we put the spotlight on upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating, is hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.

This week's choice is -

Marked (The Soulseer Trilogy #1)- Sue Tingey
ISBN - 9781848668942
Publisher - Jo Fletcher Books
Release date - May 7 2015

With no family and very few friends, Lucky’s psychic ability has always made her an outcast. The only person she can rely on is Kayla, the ghost girl who has been with her since she was born.

But Kayla is not all that she appears.

And when Lucky is visited by a demonic assassin with a message for her friend, she finds herself dragged into the Underlands – and the political fight for the daemon king’s throne.

Lucky, trapped in the daemon world, is determined to find her way home… until she finds herself caught between the charms of the Guardian Jamie, the charismatic Daemon of Death Jinx – and the lure of finding out who she really is...

I stumbled across this one the other day and was immediately drawn to that cover! Luckily the synopsis sounds pretty cool as well so definitely one for the wishlist.

Waiting On Wednesday, where we put the spotlight on upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating, is hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.

This week's choice is -

Gleam - Tom Fletcher
ISBN - 9781848662520
Publisher - Jo Fletcher Books
Expected release date - September 4th 2014

In this Gormenghastian world the Factory is the law – but that does not
mean justice.
The Gargantuan factory of Gleam has seen a millennia of decreasing population. Now the central district is fully inhabited and operational; the outskirts have been left for the wilderness to reclaim. This decaying, lawless zone is the Discard; the home of Wild Alan. He’s convinced that the Gleam authorities were behind the disaster that killed his parents and his ambition is to prove it. But he’ll uncover more secrets than he bargained for. - Goodreads

As soon as I read 'this Gormenghastian world' this book went straight onto my wishlist! I love the Gormenghast books and how weird they are so if this is half as good as I'm expecting I shall probably love it. I've also read The Leaping, The Thing on the Shore and The Ravenglass Eye by the same author, a perfectly creepy horror trilogy with some great writing so I've been looking forward to seeing what came next.

Book Haul #82

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

I've been away from home all week but still managed to end up with all these! It's been a really good week, went to a great event on Thursday night (photos in my end of the month post!) and got one of my most anticipated books of 2014 to review but late yesterday afternoon I heard the sad news about Strange Chemistry and Exhibit A. Anyone who reads this blog on at least a semi-regular basis knows of my affection for all things Strange Chemistry, they've introduced me to some outstanding authors and published some amazing books so I'm saddened by the news that Angry Robot have stopped publication immediately of all their forthcoming SC books. I can only hope that the authors who have worked so hard are able to find new homes for their books, I know I'll be checking frequently! There's so much more I could say about the situation, including my initial reaction from yesterday but I'm not going to say anything else except thank you to all the great people who worked for or wrote for Strange Chemistry and I wish you all the best.

Earlier this week I was sitting at my desk going through all my pre-orders & wishlists and it suddenly dawned on me how close YALC & LonCon are. I seriously need to start saving some money so I canceled the majority of my pre-orders and I removed all my quick links to various book shopping sites in the vain hope that I might stop buying books if only for a few weeks! So far, so good... The books I got were pre-orders that were already on their way and Hexed which I forgot to cancel on my Kindle so it better be good!

By the way, if you're in the UK and/or going to either YALC or LonCon let me know!

This week has been a great week! Lots of new books but I only bought three! I'm so proud of myself :) It was library week and blog tour week and review copy week all rolled into one so still a few books in but I only bought three... I'll keep repeating that as I can't believe it! Before I get to the books I'd just like to say thanks to the lovely folks at Hodder who, after seeing my WoW post on Wednesday for Smiler's Fair, offered to send me a copy and I have it in my covetous little hands now.

Book Haul #64

I've not been home at all this week - cake club, the 3 year old's turning into 4 year olds, going to see Tinkerbell & the Pirate Fairy with the 4 year olds, decidedly fraught train journeys (four of them, one with my father...) - and yet I still appear to have managed to added books to my shelves! Not many admittedly but I'm pretty sure you should be able to go away for a week without buying books!  I'm not quite sure what happened there...

If this post looks a bit funny it's because I've written it on my Kindle for the first time!

As I thought I didn't get books for Christmas from other people but I certainly treated myself! I splurged on something I've needed coveted wanted for a while and also picked up a few extras - I should never go shopping with my sister as we always seem to end up spending a small fortune, we enable each other! This is the last book haul that would include books I've bought, I'm going to try and be good in 2014 which means only reading books I already own, that come from the library or if I'm lucky, review titles. It's going to be hard but I have so many things I want to do and that means saving the pennies!

Bought

The Dark Is Rising - Susan Cooper (Folio Society)

The Nightmare Before Christmas - Tim Burton

Path of Needles - Alison Littlewood
These Broken Stars - Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt

Familiar Spirit - Lisa Tuttle
