Book Haul #123, Or The One Where It Was World Book Day...

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

So, it was World Book Day yesterday and over 200 children in a bookshop at once all wanting to choose their WBD books is a fantastic time to take your lunch break... I escaped by going somewhere else to pick up a couple of the WBD titles and trying to find a quiet spot in the coffee shop to read. From that you can gather I bought books again but it was only 3 of the WBD titles plus I completely forgot to mention my copy of Morning Star last week. I think anybody who's a fan would be alright with me breaking my ban for the last of that particular trilogy!

This could be a big one... I haven't done a book haul post for a month and as it's the festive season I've gone a bit mad both buying and requesting, never mind the enormous library haul(which I'm going to leave for next week)! At Christmas, for every book I buy someone I seem to be buying one for myself so that's working out quite well so far. I've bought myself a tote bag that I've been drooling over for a while and a special edition of The Miniaturist by Jessi Burton! Garden Spells is a re-buy, I want to read it again before I start First Frost but can't find my original copy.

And last but not least...

Ooooh, this has been a good week for books! But a bad week for Internet access, yet again I've spent the best part of two days without any Internet again thanks to my service provider. I've not even been able to pick up any of the local wi-fi hotspots for some reason so have had plenty of time to do other stuff like read! Luckily I drafted this on Tuesday so at least there's something on the blog this week, I've added this bit using my phone and it has taken a looooong time... On the bright side it was library week this week and I may have gone slightly overboard with my requests, and they all came in at the same time!

This week's choice is -

The Copper Promise - Jen Williams

'There are some far-fetched rumors about the caverns beneath the Citadel…

Some say the mages left their most dangerous secrets hidden there; others, that great riches are hidden there; even that gods have been imprisoned in its darkest depths.

For Lord Frith, the caverns hold the key to his vengeance. Against all the odds, he has survived torture and lived to see his home and his family taken from him … and now someone is going to pay. For Wydrin of Crosshaven and her faithful companion, Sir Sebastian Caverson, a quest to the Citadel looks like just another job. There’s the promise of gold and adventure. Who knows, they might even have a decent tale or two once they’re done.

But sometimes there is truth in rumor.

Soon this reckless trio will be the last line of defence against a hungry, restless terror that wants to tear the world apart. And they’re not even getting paid.'

Gah! How gorgeous is that cover? I follow the lovely Jen on Twitter - @sennydreadful, have had this on pre-order since July this year and it feels like it's already been a long wait with another two months still to go... I want it now!!!

I've had an amazing week, the obvious highlight being the signing I went to on Tuesday featuring Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch... Totally worth the two hour wait in the queue and they were both such lovely chaps! Back at my dad's for two weeks, his phone is fixed but internet access remains spotty - on and off quicker than I can keep up with! I'm putting up with it though and trying to draft posts as and when it lets me.  Anyway, here's what I got this week - considering I was stood in amongst the shelves at Forbidden Planet for so long I'm surprised I didn't end up with more!

Bought

The Republic of Thieves - Scott Lynch

Mort - Terry Pratchett

Raising Steam - Terry Pratchett

Hide Me Among the Graves - Tim Powers

The Demon King - Cinda Williams Chima

Rags & Bones - Melissa Marr

Kindle

Tyger Tyger - Kersten Hamilton

The Iron Bells - Jeanette Battista

The Ghost House - Helen Phifer
Won

The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
From Gollancz

Beauty - Sarah Pinborough

All in all, a great week for me - special thanks to Gollancz for sending me a copy of Beauty, looking forward to reading it once I've read Poison and Charm. And yay, new Terry Pratchett (Raising Steam) and old Terry Pratchett (Mort) re-released in hardcover with a luscious cover. To start with the first 21 books in the Discworld series are all being re-released in this special hardcover with new covers and being the fan that I am I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy most if not all of them!

Waiting On Wednesday #14 - The Ocean At The End Of The Lane

Waiting On Wednesday, where we put the spotlight on upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating, is hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.

This week I've chosen

The Ocean At The End Of The Lane - Neil Gaiman*
ISBN (UK) - 978-1472200310
Publisher - Headline
Expected Date - June 18 2013

'THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE is a fable that reshapes modern fantasy: moving, terrifying and elegiac - as pure as a dream, as delicate as a butterfly's wing, as dangerous as a knife in the dark, from storytelling genius Neil Gaiman.

It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed - within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it.

His only defence is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is an ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang.' - Goodreads

I absolutely love and adore Neil Gaiman, I bought all of his children's books & picture books last week for my niece & nephew's birthday present (to be kept here of course, so Aunty Nona can read them ;) ) and I try to buy everything by him. This went straight to the top of the 'I want it now' list and I preordered as soon as I could. I hear a nasty rumor too, that he is doing one last signing tour both in the US and the UK , then that's it - no more signings as they've become too big an event! You can guarantee nothing will stop me from being at a signing this year even if I have to travel to the other end of the country!

* This is the US cover, as of yet there appears to be no UK cover.

What are you waiting for this week?
