Behind Closed Doors - B A Paris

The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do.

You’d like to get to know Grace better.

But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart.

Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn't work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.

Sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

I read this in one sitting, more or less. I had to put it down to get a train and thanks to travel sickness rearing its ugly head I had to wait to read it until I got home. It's probably just as well. Behind Closed Doors is one of the best books I have read in a while and it frightened the life out of me. Whilst reading it I couldn't settle, I had to keep getting up and walking about while continuing to read as Grace and Jack's story developed.

Grace and Jack are the perfect couple. They met, fell in love, had a whirlwind romance and got married. Jack accepted that Grace cared for her younger sister which made Grace fall for him even faster. Scratch the surface though and not everything is as it seems.

Alternating between past and present Behind Closed Doors paints a chilling portrait of domestic abuse, but the psychological kind - not physical, which to me is just as frightening and just as threatening. Using Millie as a means to control her everyone is awed by how amazing Grace is, the perfect hostess, the perfect wife, the perfect sister... She never goes anywhere though, and on the rare occasion she does you can guarantee Jack is not far behind. When a new couple are introduced into their social circle there is a subtle shift in power though. This coincides with Millie's upcoming 18th birthday - the day she will come to live with Grace and Jack. Grace is determined that this is never going to happen so starts to formulate a plan. What happens after that is a rollercoaster of emotions, mostly fear but also small glimmers of hope and the possibility that there might be a future for the sisters after all.

If you looked up fear, disturbed, terrifying and other similar words in the dictionary you would find perfect descriptions of Behind Closed Doors. This is one of the most disturbing books about psychological abuse I've read in recent years and I literally could not put the book down until I had finished it. It was painful to read the way Grace was treated, you could picture yourself in the same situation - locked in a tiny room, estranged from family and friends with nowhere to turn. The situation isn't helped by the irony of the fact that Jack is a prominent barrister specializing in domestic abuse cases!

This is the author's debut novel and if her first is this brilliant I look forward to reading whatever else she writes. The writing is both gripping and chilling. Jack as a character is one of the most manipulative and deceitful I've ever met, impossible to do do anything but hate and while I didn't like Grace to start with I soon warmed to her and her battle to survive, her willingness to sacrifice everything for Millie was heartbreaking. By the time I got to the last few chapters I was literally walking around whilst reading with my mouth hanging open, I could not sit still because I was terrified about how it was all going to end. All I will say about that is that even just a little faith in other people sometimes has the biggest rewards.

If you are looking for a page turner, a stunning debut, a perfect psychological thriller, then you probably won't get much better than Behind Closed Doors. I certainly won't forget this book for a long time and I already know it's in my list of top ten books for 2016.

Book Haul #120, Or The One Where I Nearly Gave In...

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

As the title suggests I nearly gave in, after a whole month of buying no books, and splurged madly! I had some birthday money left over and burning a hole in my pocket and naturally the first thing I normally buy is books. It was so hard to resist but I did and instead put it in my Comic Con fund! I did get some review titles this week, both electronic and physical copies all of which I can't wait to read and sated my need for all the shiny, pretty, new books...

Don't forget to enter my birthday giveaway, open until midnight tomorrow so go here to check it out!

Best Of Apex Magazine Volume One - Lesley Conner & Jason Sizemore

Whether wandering down endless stairwells, searching for answers in the desert, or reaching out to the stars, for more than six years Apex Magazine has entertained readers with stories that are strange, beautiful, shocking, and surreal. Now, for the first time, editors Jason Sizemore and Lesley Conner are collecting the award winning and nominated stories, those chosen by readers as Story of the Year, and their own personal favorites into one anthology.

A Veil that wipes the experiences of war from soldiers’ memories. A witch who faces down both God and the devil to save a soul. A swaying dance that crosses the galaxy to transmit a message. A vampire caught in a web of politics and law by his responsibility to his family. Within this collection, you will find 21 stories that explore what it means to love, to regret, to be human.

With stories by Ursula Vernon, Ken Liu, Rachel Swirsky, Sarah Pinsker, Rich Larson, and more, Best of Apex Magazine: Volume 1 brings readers some of the best stories Apex Magazine has published so far, chosen by editors Lesley Conner and Jason Sizemore.

Where to start? All the stories are good, that's why they're in this compilation but some were quite simply outstanding. Of the 21 stories I loved most of them, never an easy feat in an anthology, and I think there was one that I didn't really warm to.This is one of the best anthologies I've read for a while, it was a pleasure to read and get lost in. It became a nightly treat to sit down, relax and read a couple of the stories before switching off for the night and I'm now working my way through the Apex volumes I had on my Kindle because if there are any half as good this collection? Well, they must be pretty special.

Favorites included both stories by Ursula Vernon, rapidly becoming a favorite author for me! Jackalope Wives was beautifully written and reminded me of Charles de Lint's Coyote stories in a way. Pocosin, her other story included, about a dying possum god and the fight for his soul by God, the Devil and Death was an interesting take on Death but thankfully still involved drinking whisky.

Candy Girl by Chikodili Emelumadu is almost enough to put you off candy for life! It's easy to see why it was nominated for a Shirley Jackson award as I don't think I'll be able to look at a Mars Bar in the same way ever again. If You Were A Dinosaur, My Love by Rachel Swirsky broke my heart and The Performance Artist by Lettie Prell freaked me out even thinking about the possibilities that her story brought up about transferring consciousness.

Armless Maidens Of The American West by Genevieve Valentine was compelling in that awful way as you thought about the fact the researcher in the story knew of enough 'armless maidens' in one section of the country to be able to consider setting up a research project.

Other stories involved aliens, dolls, SETI, vampires, the afterlife, veterans and strange books that appear to converse with you and are all worth reading but my absolute favorite stories were Still Life (A Sexagesimal Fairy Tale) by Ian Tregillis and L'espirit de l'escalier by Peter M Ball. Still Life was addictive reading about a clockmaker called Tink in a city called Nycthemeron and her developing fascination with Valentine, the consort of Queen Perjumbellatrix. Worth reading for the fantastical names alone Still Life tells the tale of time and love and how time literally flies for some but stands still for others. L'espirit de l'escalier was the heartbreaking tale of a grieving man, visiting the Endless Stairwell with the the ashes of his fiancee as they never got to visit whilst she was alive. This was my favorite overall I think but also scared the living daylights out of me as I've had a recurring dream about a bottomless staircase ever since I was tiny so it was weird to read about one after all this time.

If you're at all a fan of short stories then you definitely need to check this volume out. Lesley and Jason have put together a great collection of stories that kept me hooked all the way through. A special mention must also be made of the cover artist, Adrian Borda, whose “Life is a Dance in The Rain III” makes for an amazing cover and features mechanical items performing human actions. I'm off now to renew my subscription to Apex as I can't wait to read more fantastic short stories!

ARC August Final Update

ARC August is hosted by Octavia & Shelly over at Read Sleep Repeat. Well, I would say my stab at ARC August was pretty successful although discovering I've got dozens of reviews still to write wasn't quite what I wanted! In the end I read 7 books and am halfway through another one with another 17 to write reviews for. I think they're going to have to be very brief reviews otherwise I can see myself having to read them all again!

ARC August Update #3

ARC August is hosted by Octavia & Shelly over at Read Sleep Repeat.Well, this week didn't quite go as planned! Rather than making a serious dent in my Netgalley/Edelweiss/review books for Bout of Books I've been reading anything but. Ooops??? For this last week of ARC August I'm going to to my best to get at least 3 ARC's read and hopefully get some reviews written. If I achieve that I'll be happy, sort of...

Still Reading

I'm really enjoying The Unnoticeables but I only seem to be able to read it in small chunks! It's a very descriptive novel and as my concentration is shot at the moment I'm having trouble with the dual time periods. Remembering who's who is an even bigger job!

Finished This Week

I just discovered Lucy is going to be at BristolCon this year so will have to take my copy along to get signed! Expect a review sometime, we all know how behind I am...

ARC August

Hosted by Octavia & Shelly over at Read Sleep Repeat for the third year running it would be rude of me not to take part! My Netgalley/Edelweiss requests have steadily spiraled out of control so I'm putting my foot down and reading all ARC's all August. Should be easy even if I go a-wandering again because all I need is my Kindle...

Rules:

The rules are very simple
  • It may be a physical ARC or and eARC but it MUST be an ARC
  • Yes it can be an ARC that has released as long as it’s an ARC I’m not going to nit pick much
  • HAVE FUN WITH THIS! Feeling like you are being “forced” to read is the best way turn a fun event into a yucky obligation.
  • Update post! I personally will do a post for each Saturday in August but that’s just me. You can update once a week, every other week or once for the whole darn event. This update can be in the form of a blog or tumblr post, vlog, link to your “ARC August 2015″ shelf or even an instagram pic! I want to make this as easy and low pressure as possible for you.
I've no idea what I'm going to read, I'm thinking maybe I should do a Netgalley version of the TBR jar and do things that way?

If you too are embarrassed by your NG percentage then sign up here!

ARC August

http://www.readsleeprepeat.org/2014/07/2015-arc-august-sign-up/
Yep, it's that time of year when you realize you have a rather extortionate amount of unread ARC's and Octavia at Read Sleep Repeat pops up at just the right time with ARC August. I'm not going to say how many unread ARC's/review copies I have but it's safe to say the pile is in double figures. I'm hoping to get fifteen ARC's read in August but will be happy with at least ten. They will include

  • Smiler's Fair - Rebecca Levene (just about to start this one!)
  • Gates of Thread & Stone - Lori M Lee
  • Jackaby - William Ritter
  • The Dark World - Cara Lynn Schultz
  • Glimpse - Kendra Leighton

I also need to write reviews for

  • The Geography of You & Me - Jennifer E Smith
  • Landline - Rainbow Rowell
  • A Place For Us Pt 1 - Harriet Evans

I'll update this post as I go and, hopefully, add links to reviews!

Book Haul #83 - The Late Edition

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

This is my last haul before I go off to Reading for two weeks! It's Henley Regatta time, I'm going to Waterstones Piccadilly for an event featuring Marcus Sedgwick & Meg Rosoff, another event featuring Rainbow Rowell and of course it's the big one - London ComicCon!!! Posts here may be sporadic as I don't know how much time I'm going to have to get online but as I managed to lug my (very heavy & very large) 8 year old laptop up there last week I'll try my best :) In book buying news this week was a good one! I bought one book, secondhand, and it cost pennies! I'm pretty sure I've read it but I can't find it in any of my book journals so it's on the TBR pile for now. It was also library week so that satisfied my book buying urges :)

Bought

The Wild Swans

Far From You | Shadow Spell | The Originals

Dead Scared | Darkness Falls | Sleeping Angel
Review - Netgalley/Edelweiss

Broken Monsters | Drowned | Salt & Storm

Clean Sweep ARC Challenge 2014 Results Post

My out-of-control ARC pile was dangerously large so I signed up to take part in the month long Clean Sweep ARC Challenge, hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer & Angela's Anxious Life. I didn't set out to read a certain number of ARC's or make a definite list because I always up reading little/none of what I intend to read! This worked well as I managed quite a few ARC's, admittedly some were for blog tours but that just meant I was reading them earlier than I normally plan to. I'm also sure I could have managed to read quite a few more than I did but there were so many good books calling my name this month. Here's a final list of what I did read with links to reviews on here or Goodreads.

Now, if I could just figure out a better way of organizing my ARC's I wouldn't get quite so snowed under. Looking forward to Netgalley November later on in the year though!
