Waiting On Wednesday #164 - Fate Of Flames

Waiting On Wednesday, where we put the spotlight on upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating, is hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.

This week's choice is -

Fate of Flames (Effigies #1) - Sarah Raughley
ISBN - 9781481466776
Publisher - Simon Pulse
Release date - November 22 2016

Four girls with the power to control the elements and save the world from a terrible evil must come together in the first epic novel in a brand-new series.

When Phantoms - massive beasts made from nightmares and darkness - suddenly appeared and began terrorizing the world, four girls, the Effigies, each gained a unique power to control one of the classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Since then, four girls across the world have continually fought against the Phantoms, fulfilling their cosmic duty. And when one Effigy dies, another girl gains her power as a replacement.

But now, with technologies in place to protect the world’s major cities from Phantom attacks, the Effigies have stopped defending humanity and, instead, have become international celebrities, with their heroic feats ranked, televised, and talked about in online fandoms.

Until the day that New York City’s protection against the Phantoms fails, a man seems to be able to control them by sheer force of will, and Maia, a high school student, unexpectedly becomes the Fire Effigy.

Now Maia has been thrown into battle with three girls who want nothing to do with one another. But with the first human villain that the girls have ever faced, and an army of Phantoms preparing for attack, there isn’t much time for the Effigies to learn how to work together.

Can the girls take control of their destinies before the world is destroyed forever?

I quite enjoyed Sarah Raughley's first book, Feather Bound, so I'm intrigued to read her second effort. Plus being able to control the elements and monsters made from nightmares and darkness sound pretty cool!

Top Ten Tuesday #45 - Books On My Spring TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely people at The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is -

Top Ten Books On My Spring 2014 TBR List

I saw this topic and thought it would be an easy one. But then I started thinking and I realized I haven't even thought about what I'll be reading in the near future! For me this is unusual as I do like to have a vague idea of what's coming up and what I have to look forward to. I'm sure once I see other people's lists I'll be kicking myself for not thinking of most of the books listed.

Cuckoo Song | Dreams of Gods & Monsters

First Fifteen Lives of Harry North | Dark Days | Feather Bound

The King | A Love Like Blood

Banished | Half Bad | Red Rising

Book Haul #67

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

Great week this week! I went to my first signing of the year on Thursday - the lovely Adam Christopher, and of course had to buy the two books he was launching even though I already have e-ARC's, plus a copy of his first novel which I previously borrowed from the library. It was also Pratchett time again and another two books in the new hardcover collectors editions were released this week. And somehow I managed to be completely oblivious that Juliet Marillier had released a book of her short stories, including the Sevenwaters novella 'Twixt Firelight and Water' and well, it would have been rude not to buy it :)

Bought

The Burning Dark | Hang Wire | Empire State

Hero | Prickle Moon | Pippi Longstocking

Guards! Guards! | Men At Arms
For Review

The Golden Apple | Feather Bound | The Wizard's Promise

And if she doesn't play along, and help the enemy destroy him…she will be sold to the highest bidder in the black market for human swans.

Now Deanna is struggling to break free from the gilded cage that would trap her forever…'

Feather Bound is a dark debut reminiscent of Gabriel García Márquez's A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, and the twisted truth behind the fairy tale of Cinderella. - Goodreads

I have had this on my wishlist since April 2013, it now has a cover (which I love!) and a release date (which I don't love, too long!) and want to read it now. The twisted truth behind Cinderella? Yes please...
