Bookmarked... #25

The return of the (mostly) weekly post letting you all know what I'm reading and have lined up for the week! It's my own version of Sheila at Book Journey's It's Monday What Are You Reading (now hosted by Kathryn at Book Date) and I have her permission to rename it for my own nefarious reasons...

I thought I'd got a lot of reading done this week but looking back on my reading journal tells another story. I still don't know what I did with my spare time over the last week as I don't seem to have achieved much! I did start watching some horror movies in preparation for my R.I.P. & Spooky Sunday posts but apart from that? Nothing much got done...

Read

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17553446-in-the-woods

I absolutely loved In The Woods! I honestly don't know why it's taken me so long to read it. I own a copy of this but it's been so long since I bought it that it's gone AWOL and I had to borrow a copy from the library.

Mixed feelings about Mr. Splitfoot... I loved some of it and hated some of it. That probably explains why it's taken me so long to read it!

Still reading

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18073726-dead-silent

I'm struggling with this one. I quite enjoyed the first book but this one isn't holding my attention.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23746546-let-me-tell-you

I'm savouring this book. I'm such a huge fan of Shirley Jackson so I like to take my time with everything I read or re-read! Let Me Tell You is more than likely going to end up on my top ten books of the year list.

Started

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28447390-fell

Both of these are for my R.I.P. challenge! Alison Littlewood is fast becoming a favorite author for me. I love Path Of Needles and A Cold Season, I'm really enjoying Unquiet House so far and I just got Hidden People from Netgalley so that may well be next on the reading pile! I picked Fell up on a whim at the library but so far, so good!

What have you been reading recently? Or not?!

Two weeks worth of reading for me, crammed into one week... Bout of Books 17 was a total bust for me. I started a book on day 1 and that was it, I somehow managed not to read again until the day BoB finished. I've no idea why but I'm pleased that it was a temporary non-reading blip otherwise I don't know what I'd be doing!

Book Haul #130, Or The One Where I Only Buy One Book Again...

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

A quick haul post from me this week as I'm not at home and doing this on a Kindle... More fabulous review books and just one book purchased! Shirley Jackson's Let Me Tell You has been on my wishlist since before it was published and I finally gave in and bought a copy this week. I've already started it and it's reminding me of how much I love her work, time for another Jackson reread methinks!

Bout of Books 12 Day 6

 http://boutofbooks.blogspot.com/2015/01/bout-of-books-12-day-6.html

Day 6 of Bout of Books 12 and rather than slowing down on my reading, as I thought yesterday, I had a sleepless night so decided to read

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/666427579

No pun intended! I finished it about 5am and picked up The Lottery and Other Stories to read (part of my Shirley Jackson reread this year). I might put that to one side though as I want to take my time and pick up either the Jodi Picoult or Elly Griffiths books I have from the library which need to go back next week.

Progress

Number of pages I've read today: 400
Total number of pages read: 2207
Number of books read today: 1
Total number of books I've read: 8

Challenges

Literary Quote Challenge hosted by Gone with the Words

I love this opening paragraph of The Lottery because it makes everything seem so innocuous and nobody has any idea of what's about to happen

Book Haul #94

As expected I didn't receive a single book for Christmas but do not fear, I more than made up for that unhappy fact by buying a few books as presents to myself! Also listed this week are the other half of my review/blog tour books and my December library haul. I've been really lucky with my requests so far but now Netgalley have changed their dashboard I can't find titles I've requested but not heard about anywhere. Anybody know where I can find this? I've gone to request the same title three times now...  My library haul has three Shirley Jackson titles, I own all of them but do you think I can find them? I was in the mood for a reread of The Sundial so decided to have a Jackson marathon, hopefully reviews in January!

R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril IX

The amazing art used for all the R.I.P. banners are the property of the wonderful Abigail Larson.

I have been meaning to take part in R.I.P. for the last five years but always remember too late! This year, I'm only a couple of days late so I'm going for it.

Stories can make us look back over our shoulders and question every creak and groan on a dark, quiet night. Stories can cause our hearts to race with ever-increasing tension as we forgo sleep to rush towards a surprising conclusion. Stories can make us suspicious of every character as we challenge the protagonist to be the first to solve the crime. Stories can make us sleep with the lights on, make us pull the covers just a little bit tighter, and can make every shadow seem menacing.

Be they our favorite cozy mysteries, exciting police procedurals, classic tales about things that go bump in the night or contemporary terrors that chill us to the bone, there is something delicious about the ability of the printed word to give us a fright. At no time of the year is this more of a delight than when Summer heat turns to Autumn chill as the days become ever darker.

You can choose books from any/all of the below and there are different levels of peril!

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

I'm going for Peril the First, four books fitting the above but I'm hoping I'll read more than four!

I've got so many short story compilations to read I'm going to use R.I.P. as an excuse to read stories from at least two different collections!

I love horror movies, thrillers, any movie that sends a shiver down your back or makes you jump basically! I've already watched my first movie for Peril of the Screen but I'm hoping to fit in at least ten or more movies for my favorite time of year. I'll add pics as I watch them here.

Solo AKA Alone

I'm also really excited to join the group read this year. I've been looking for an excuse to re-read The Haunting of Hill House for a while as I'm a fan of Shirley Jackson's writing. If you want to join in click here and sign up. The group read has already started but the discussion isn't until October 1st  so you have still have nearly a month to read this great book.
