Arrowood - Mick Finlay

London Society takes their problems to Sherlock Holmes. Everyone else goes to Arrowood.

The Afghan War is over and a deal with the Irish appears to have brought an end to sectarian violence, but Britain's position in the world is uncertain and the gap between rich and poor is widening. London is a place where the wealthy party while the underclass are tempted into lives of crime, drugs, and prostitution. A serial killer stalks the streets. Politicians are embroiled in financial and sexual scandals. The year is 1895.

The police don't have the resources to deal with everything that goes on in the capital. The rich turn to a celebrated private detective when they need help: Sherlock Holmes. But in densely populated south London, where the crimes are sleazier and Holmes rarely visits, people turn to Arrowood, a private investigator who despises Holmes, his wealthy clientele and his showy forensic approach to crime. Arrowood understands people, not clues.

As the cover blurb says, if Society has a problem they go to Sherlock Holmes but where does everybody else go? To Arrowood, William Arrowood to be exact, and his trusty sidekick Barnett. I'm not sure where I first heard about Arrowood but I'm sure it was along the lines of the television rights having being sold, or something like that. I picked it up from the library thinking an anti-Sherlock story would be the sort of read I'd love.

Arrowood and Barnett solve cases, the sort of cases that Holmes would turn his nose up at. This latest case though is one they're wishing they'd never taken, A French woman is claiming her brother has disappeared but the only lead she has involves a place and a man the duo wish to encounter again. They apply themselves to the case though and are soon up to their necks in trouble. Death seems to be following them and a young lady who might have helped is brutally murdered, the young boy they use as a runner is kidnapped and Barnett is hiding a huge secret from everyone.

The case is resolved, thanks mainly to Barnett who appears to be the mainstay of the two, out and about on the street whilst Arrowood stays very much behind the scenes, distracted by the arrival of his interfering sister and the location of his errant wife. There's nothing pretty about Arrowood, it's bloody and brutal, and there are no punches spared. No-one is safe, man, woman, or child, and the dead bodies pile up rapidly. Anyone lucky enough to be alive doesn't necessarily mean unharmed and the police involved aren't all on the right side.

I actually struggled with Arrowood. I picked it up on several occasions, getting a bit further each time and at one point was considering it as a DNF but then something clicked and I realized I wanted to know what happened to them all so I stuck with it. I'm actually intrigued to see if the television rights thing was real, or just something I made up! It would make a fantastic series, and the characters would be more suited to the screen than the page, in my opinion. Having said that I would probably pick up another book featuring Barnett & Arrowood if I happened to see it in the library.

So That Was... #3 - March

Not a great month in terms of books! I think that's the least number of books I've read from my own shelves for a long time, maybe even a year or more. It wasn't great in terms of challenges either, the only one I increased with any great amount was my Goodreads challenge. If this was a school report it would say 'could do better'...

So That Was... #2 - February

What a great month for reading! I've had nine '5 clock' books this month, thirteen '4 clock' books and just one dud (a '2 clock' freebie on Kindle) so I think I might have really got into a rhythm with my reading at the moment. Of course, whether this carries on throughout the rest of the year remains to be seen! Having so many high rated reads also makes it impossible to pick a favorite book of the month so I've picked 3, and that was too hard... I narrowed it down even more by not including rereads which helped a teeny tiny bit!

I managed to read slightly more books from my own shelves this month (yay!) and despite still not having my replacement Kindle have read 6 books whilst hunched over the Kindle app on my phone.

My Year Of Reading 2015

As reading years go 2015 didn't exactly go to plan for me, in terms of number of books read and challenge targets. I traveled far more last year than I have done for a while and then the inevitable health problems cropped up over the last four months of the year, both of which combined to give my lowest total of books in eight years and a ton of unfinished challenges.

I initially set my target at 365... Who was I trying to kid?! I thought I would have more reading time, not less and so was far too ambitious! By the end of the year this total had come down to 250 and I finished on 261. The last time I read less than that was in 2007 when I spent roughly 14 weeks in hospital!

All Other Challenges

Netgalley & Edelweiss Challenge

My target was 50, I read 28. Not much else to say...

British Books Challenge

The only one I finished, I tracked 21 books but it was more than that by December 31. I lost track of most of my challenge targets somewhere around August. C'est la vie!

Fairy Tale Challenge

I'm disgusted with myself over this. If you're a regular reader you know how fairy tale obsessed I am but I only managed a paltry 3 titles before losing track completely?

2015 TBR Pile Challenge

I went for 50 books in this one and should have smashed that target easily but didn't. Before losing track I'd read 34 books published prior to January 1 2015. It was probably more by the end but no record...

My challenge post for 2016 will go up shortly but I'm limiting myself to Goodreads, 2016 TBR Pile Challenge and the Retelling challenge this year.

Top Ten Tuesday #103 - Bookish Resolutions For 2016

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the fabulous girls cover at The Broke & The Bookish. This week's topic is -

Top Ten Seven Bookish Resolutions For 2016

I have plenty of bookish/bloggish resolutions I want to stick to this year. most of them in a concerted effort to either save money (to fund a holiday to France and Comic Con) or to declutter (my study/library and my bedroom both look like a library threw up in them, not in a good way...)

This one should be self-explanatory! We all have the same problem, piles of books on our shelves (and floors in some cases) which get overlooked in favor of the shiny and new. This year I am reading from my shelves as much as possible. I was going to be really ruthless and say 'and only from my shelves' but in view of no. 3 I decided to ease up and say...

But not to reserve books in silly amounts as I have been doing for years! I'm allowed up to 30 books at at a time and I know for a fact that some quite a few go back unread because someone has put a hold on them. I'm going to try and request mainly new titles which will hopefully help with...

This is the one I'm going to struggle with most because of all the shiny new titles! I am determined to stick to it though. I want to go on holiday and I want to save more money for ComicCon this year - the hotel I'm staying in this year is a bit more expensive but it's an extra night this year and it's close to the venue. If this means no new books so be it! I have allowed myself a handful of preorders from the Book Depository including The Raven King and a hard copy of Every Heart A Doorway which are already paid for so technically no money changes hands in 2016...

I thought about going completely cold turkey on the Netgalley/Edelweiss thing but I've tried before, failed miserably and ended up requesting even more than usual. This is my compromise. If I want to request a new title I have to make sure I have reviewed 5 (or more) previous requests first. This will help to maintain a sensible amount of e-galleys and help bump up that old percentage a bit.

Including Goodreads I was taking part in 5 challenges last year and in the end it just didn't work. This year I think I'm going to limit it to 3, if that. I've set my Goodreads challenge already - 275, reasons for which will be in my challenge wrapup post coming later this week but I'm dithering over a couple of challenges to join for more specific targets.

I spent a lot of 2015 out and about and as a result the blog suffered. Add in the health problems and hospital visits over the last four months of the year and it all turned out rather disastrously. This year I'm going to try and keep a couple of weeks worth of posts in reserve so should the same thing happen again I'm slightly better organized!

This was maybe my biggest fail of the year! I know I wrote some but I discovered a couple of things last year. Firstly, the more I love a book? The harder I find to write a review about it, I have no idea why but there you go. I will try to sort that out this year but just not quite sure how. Secondly, I discovered tat I cannot review historical novels to save my life. As much as I love them there is obviously a mental block about reviewing a historical novel. This is a huge shame because at least one of my all-time favorite authors writes historical fiction. Something else to work on this year...

Book Haul #104, Or The One With All The Library Books...

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

It's been a good week in terms of book buying, just one book which was actually a preorder that I completely forgot was due out around now and a couple of review books that I'm excited about. The majority of my haul this week though is the giant stack of library books I somehow managed to acquire! Hopefully they'll keep me going for a while... There's a couple of -rereads in the pile and the only Mieville book I haven't read so fingers crossed it's as good as the rest!

It's my birthday! And I've received no books :( I've not bought any books either so... Thankfully it was library day this week so I have a nice shiny stack of library books and a couple of review titles I've been wanting to read :) I got quite a bit of birthday money but instead of splurging I'm using some to renew my passport, can't believe how expensive it is! Off out for lunch later, and a special birthday dinner tonight - one where I don't have to clean up afterwards!

Book Haul #88 - Model of Restraint!

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

So... I haven't done a book haul post for five weeks! I haven't been well, my attention is shot to pieces and I ended up in hospital again. The only good thing about feeling awful is that I've barely requested any review copies, not really bought a few books and requested three, yes that's three, titles from the library. This may all change today though as I'm at BristolCon with lots of amazing authors and great people. Providing I don't pass out or embarrass myself in any way there could well be pictures!

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

This is my last haul before I go off to Reading for two weeks! It's Henley Regatta time, I'm going to Waterstones Piccadilly for an event featuring Marcus Sedgwick & Meg Rosoff, another event featuring Rainbow Rowell and of course it's the big one - London ComicCon!!! Posts here may be sporadic as I don't know how much time I'm going to have to get online but as I managed to lug my (very heavy & very large) 8 year old laptop up there last week I'll try my best :) In book buying news this week was a good one! I bought one book, secondhand, and it cost pennies! I'm pretty sure I've read it but I can't find it in any of my book journals so it's on the TBR pile for now. It was also library week so that satisfied my book buying urges :)

What a great week! I was really good this week and only bought one book, there are two in the picture though as I forgot to add House of the Rising Sun last week! I also put in a cheeky request for two books on Netgalley/Edelweiss and got approved, cue much happy squealing! I'm away this weekend as it's my sister's birthday (she's 40 on Monday!!! But you didn't hear that from me...) so probably not a lot of time for reading but I will get to spend time with my favorite four year olds!
