Can't Wait Wednesday #187 - The Hollow Girl

Can't Wait Wednesday is a new weekly meme hosted here to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally, they're books that have yet to be released as well. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine

This week's choice is -

The Hollow Girl - Hillary Monahan
ISBN - 9781524701864
Publisher - Delacorte Press
Release date - October 10th, 2017

Five boys attacked her.
Now they must repay her with their blood and flesh.

Bethan is the apprentice to a green healer named Drina in a clan of Welsh Romanies. Her life is happy and ordered and modest, as required by Roma custom, except for one thing: Silas, the son of the chieftain, has been secretly harassing her.

One night, Silas and his friends brutally assault Bethan and a half-Roma friend, Martyn. As empty and hopeless as she feels from the attack, she asks Drina to bring Martyn back from death’s door. “There is always a price for this kind of magic,” Drina warns. The way to save him is gruesome. Bethan must collect grisly pieces to fuel the spell: an ear, some hair, an eye, a nose, and fingers.

She gives the boys who assaulted her a chance to come forward and apologize. And when they don’t, she knows exactly where to collect her ingredients to save Martyn
.

It's coming up to that time of year when the books that sound good for Halloween reading start appearing. I was a big fan of Mary, Monahan's retelling of the Bloody Mary story, and I liked The Awesome, released under the name Eva Darrows, so am really looking forward to reading The Hollow Girl.

Book Haul #75

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews where we can share what new books we've picked up this past week be they bought, borrowed or downloaded. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

I'm thinking that the restrainment of the last couple of weeks was maybe just a blip, see evidence below for proof... On the bright side I got some amazing books! I bought a couple of books I've already read (Year of the Ladybird & Thief's Covenant) but I wanted copies to keep. I may have gone a bit silly with the review books as well, there's just so many great books around at the moment. The highlight of the week though was being approved by Disney for Mary: The Summoning which featured in my Bloody Mary WoW special a couple of weeks ago!

Bought

Thief's Covenant | Rebel Belle | In The Shadows

Born of Illusion | Year of the Ladybird
From the publisher

Touchstone | Elsewhens
Blog Tour

Branded

Waiting On Wednesday #73 - Bloody Mary Special!

Waiting On Wednesday, where we put the spotlight on upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating, is hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.

This week's choice is a double bill of want! You wait forever for a book featuring Bloody Mary, quite possibly one of my favorite legends, and then two come along at once. One book is from the UK and the other is from the US, one is out in June and the other in September. I'll be getting both, purely for research purposes of course...

Say Her Name - James Dawson
ISBN - 9781471402449
Publisher - Hot Key Books
Expected release date - June 5th 2014
Find - Goodreads/Book Depository

'Roberta 'Bobbie' Rowe is not the kind of person who believes in ghosts. A Halloween dare at her ridiculously spooky boarding school is no big deal, especially when her best friend Naya and cute local boy Caine agree to join in too. They are ordered to summon the legendary ghost of 'Bloody Mary': say her name five times in front of a candlelit mirror, and she shall appear... But, surprise surprise, nothing happens. Or does it?

Next morning, Bobbie finds a message on her bathroom mirror... five days... but what does it mean? And who left it there? Things get increasingly weird and more terrifying for Bobbie and Naya, until it becomes all too clear that Bloody Mary was indeed called from the afterlife that night, and she is definitely not a friendly ghost. Bobbie, Naya and Caine are now in a race against time before their five days are up and Mary comes for them, as she has come for countless others before...'

A truly spine-chilling yet witty horror from shortlisted 'Queen of Teen' author James Dawson. - Goodreads

Mary: The Summoning - Hillary Monahan
ISBN - 9781423185192
Publisher - Disney-Hyperion
Expected release date - September 2nd 2014
Find - Goodreads/Book Depository

'There is a right way and a wrong way to summon her.

Jess had done the research. Success requires precision: a dark room, a mirror, a candle, salt, and four teenage girls. Each of them - Jess, Shauna, Kitty, and Anna - must link hands, follow the rules... and never let go.

A thrilling fear spins around the room the first time Jess calls her name: "Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary. BLOODY MARY." A ripple of terror follows when a shadowy silhouette emerges through the fog, a spectre trapped behind the mirror.

Once is not enough, though - at least not for Jess. Mary is called again. And again. But when their summoning circle is broken, Bloody Mary slips through the glass with a taste for revenge on her lips. As the girls struggle to escape Mary's wrath, loyalties are questioned, friendships are torn apart, and lives are forever altered.

A haunting trail of clues leads Shauna on a desperate search to uncover the legacy of Mary Worth. What she finds will change everything, but will it be enough to stop Mary - and Jess - before it's too late?'
