Breaking The Lore - Andy Redsmith

A magical, mischievous mystery perfect for fans of Douglas Adams and Ben Aaronovitch
How do you stop a demon invasion... when you don’t believe in magic?
Inspector Nick Paris is a man of logic and whisky. So staring down at the crucified form of a murder victim who is fifteen centimetres tall leaves the seasoned detective at a loss… and the dead fairy is only the beginning.

Suddenly the inspector is offering political asylum to dwarves, consulting with witches, getting tactical advice from elves and taking orders from a chain-smoking talking crow who, technically, outranks him.

With the fate of both the human and magic worlds in his hands, Nick will have to leave logic behind and embrace his inner mystic to solve the crime and stop an army of demons from invading Manchester!

Oh this book! It's been a while since a book has made me snigger whilst reading and Breaking The Lore succeeded more than once. I was reading this on the train and I'm pretty sure this is why people were giving me odd looks...

Compared to Ben Aaronovitch and Douglas Adams, Breaking The Lore is the story of Inspector Nick Paris, or Mr. Parrots if you're a dwarf, Nipparis if you're a (friendly) demon, who would like us to think he's a tough, hard-drinking, Northern police officer but when faced with the execution of a fifteen centimetre tall fairy, he's anything but. Confronted by the fact that magic does indeed exist, the inspector's investigation team soon consists of some interesting characters including his sergeant, Bonetti, not the brightest spark in the box but you have to admire someone who thinks Finding Nemo is a documentary! There's Cassandra, their 'magical' expert and human, a chivalrous elf, a troll princess, a demon Knight, and a talking crow with a penchant for cigarettes!

Breaking The Lore is a pun-filled, fantastical detective novel with plenty to recommend it. At 321 pages it was the perfect length to get to know our motley collection of characters, to be introduced to a side of Manchester that we never knew we wanted to exist, and to get completely absorbed by centaurs and the king & queen of the fairies. The queen, by the way, is not called Titania but Gladys, short for Gladioli! The mystery has plenty of magic filled twists and turns which will keep you guessing until the very end, the whole explanation for the existence of magic is almost completely plausible, and while this first adventure is all wrapped up by the end of the story I'm very much looking forward to seeing what Mr. Parrots does next.

Huge thanks to Andy Redsmith and Canelo via Netgalley for a copy of the book!

About The Author

Andy Redsmith was born in Liverpool and grew up in Runcorn. For university, he moved the enormous distance to Salford and has lived in Manchester ever since. He says the people there are great, but we don’t talk about football.

He worked for many years as a project manager in the computing industry, a job which really is every bit as exciting as it sounds. Eventually, the call of writing became too hard to ignore and he went off to do that instead. Over the years in IT he worked with some very clever people and some complete weirdos, none of whom bear any resemblance to the characters in his books. Honest...

He has a wonderful wife, a great son, and a loft full of old Marvel comics. One day he’ll get round to selling them. That’s the comics, not the family.

So That Was... #3 - March

Not a great month in terms of books! I think that's the least number of books I've read from my own shelves for a long time, maybe even a year or more. It wasn't great in terms of challenges either, the only one I increased with any great amount was my Goodreads challenge. If this was a school report it would say 'could do better'...

My Year Of Reading 2015

As reading years go 2015 didn't exactly go to plan for me, in terms of number of books read and challenge targets. I traveled far more last year than I have done for a while and then the inevitable health problems cropped up over the last four months of the year, both of which combined to give my lowest total of books in eight years and a ton of unfinished challenges.

I initially set my target at 365... Who was I trying to kid?! I thought I would have more reading time, not less and so was far too ambitious! By the end of the year this total had come down to 250 and I finished on 261. The last time I read less than that was in 2007 when I spent roughly 14 weeks in hospital!

All Other Challenges

Netgalley & Edelweiss Challenge

My target was 50, I read 28. Not much else to say...

British Books Challenge

The only one I finished, I tracked 21 books but it was more than that by December 31. I lost track of most of my challenge targets somewhere around August. C'est la vie!

Fairy Tale Challenge

I'm disgusted with myself over this. If you're a regular reader you know how fairy tale obsessed I am but I only managed a paltry 3 titles before losing track completely?

2015 TBR Pile Challenge

I went for 50 books in this one and should have smashed that target easily but didn't. Before losing track I'd read 34 books published prior to January 1 2015. It was probably more by the end but no record...

My challenge post for 2016 will go up shortly but I'm limiting myself to Goodreads, 2016 TBR Pile Challenge and the Retelling challenge this year.

Top Ten Tuesday #93 - Last Ten Books That Came Into My Possession

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the wonderful gals cover at The Broke & The Bookish. This week's topic is -

Last Ten Books That Came Into My Possession

Having been away from home for a few weeks there's more than ten books that have come into my possession all at once! I love coming home to book post...

An Inheritance of Ashes - Review
Read the synopsis for this on Edelweiss and was hooked, can't wait to get started on it!

Sorcerer to the Crown - Review Copy
Have seen this mentioned everywhere so jumped at the chance to review it. This is my sort of fantasy!

Ink & Bone - Bought
It's about books, it's by Rachel Caine, no more to be said...

Birdy - Review Copy
Love books about friendships, especially ones that aren't all they appear to be! Hoping to start this one this week!

Nest - Won
I've seen this one mentioned a lot recently recently so was thrilled to win a copy from Viv at Serendipity Reviews!

Blood Song - Audiobook
I have read this as a hard copy although Goodreads says I haven't... Giving audiobooks another try (they always send me to sleep) so this is one for the train.

We'll Never Be Apart - Review Copy
Love YA pychological thrillers and this one features twins! Another book for the read soon pile.

Uprooted - Bought
Even though I own a review copy on Kindle I had to buy a hard copy! Probably a contender for book of the year, everyone should read this.

The Wanderers - Review Copy
Having really enjoyed Dark Days I've been stalking Edelweiss waiting for this one to go up!

Letters To Zell - Kindle
Letters To Zell was my Kindle First freebie for June through Amazon. Already read it and loved it! An interesting take on fairy tales.

Book Haul #50

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga's Reviews and Letterbox Love is a UK edition hosted by Narratively Speaking. Here we can share what new books we've picked up this past week. There are also lots of other 'book haul' memes out there for you to choose from!

I've had an amazing week, the obvious highlight being the signing I went to on Tuesday featuring Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch... Totally worth the two hour wait in the queue and they were both such lovely chaps! Back at my dad's for two weeks, his phone is fixed but internet access remains spotty - on and off quicker than I can keep up with! I'm putting up with it though and trying to draft posts as and when it lets me.  Anyway, here's what I got this week - considering I was stood in amongst the shelves at Forbidden Planet for so long I'm surprised I didn't end up with more!

Bought

The Republic of Thieves - Scott Lynch

Mort - Terry Pratchett

Raising Steam - Terry Pratchett

Hide Me Among the Graves - Tim Powers

The Demon King - Cinda Williams Chima

Rags & Bones - Melissa Marr

Kindle

Tyger Tyger - Kersten Hamilton

The Iron Bells - Jeanette Battista

The Ghost House - Helen Phifer
Won

The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
From Gollancz

Beauty - Sarah Pinborough

All in all, a great week for me - special thanks to Gollancz for sending me a copy of Beauty, looking forward to reading it once I've read Poison and Charm. And yay, new Terry Pratchett (Raising Steam) and old Terry Pratchett (Mort) re-released in hardcover with a luscious cover. To start with the first 21 books in the Discworld series are all being re-released in this special hardcover with new covers and being the fan that I am I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy most if not all of them!

So, I'm thinking Operation TBR should start in a few weeks... I may have bought a few books this week, I may have downloaded a few Kindle freebies, I may have bought some Strange Chemistry 1st birthday celebration titles (even though I own & have read Broken in paperback I'll be reviewing it next month as part of my Classics Retold project), I may have requested a few titles on Netgalley/Edelweiss... Let's face it, I well and truly messed up the book buying ban and I know I'm going to be in London until September 4th - Patrick Ness! Waterstones Piccadilly! Can't wait! Here's what tipped me off the book ban wagon!
